Opinion Wars
You know what blows my mind?
We act like we’re so advanced, so evolved, so much better than the “backward” people of history.
In ancient Rome, mobs decided who lived and who died in the Colosseum.
In Salem, entire communities turned on their neighbors, convinced they were witches.
During the French Revolution, crowds cheered for the guillotine like it was a sport.
Lynchings left people fighting over body parts. Body parts.
And every time in history, the mob thought they were right. Justified. Righteous.
Fast forward a few centuries - what’s changed?
Look at how we behave online.
We’ve swapped the torch for the keyboard, the gallows for the hashtag.
It’s not fire and pitchforks anymore - it’s comments, retweets, pile-ons.
Same psychology. Same bloodlust. Same need to belong to the crowd.
We call it “cancel culture,” but let’s be honest: it’s mob mentality with better Wi-Fi.
And the ugliest part? We pat ourselves on the back, like we’re so enlightened, while acting just as primitive as the people we claim to be above.
Because we haven’t outgrown the mob.
We’ve just increased its speed.
We brag about progress, but the only thing we’ve really advanced…
is the speed of the pitchfork.
We are risking people’s safety. You may think you are so harmless, punching your (frankly irrelevant) opinion online, but down the line, someone- even more unhinged than you- will see fit to find this person’s info and post it online for others like them to seek out and hurt this person you started the war on. Doxxing is very real. Tommyinnit, who is a YouTube personality, was doxxed- and when alerted by his friends, took his dog to hide in his closet. This is just wrong. It is so disgustingly wrong. Thankfully nothing came of it, but the fact that that fear even lived within his body for that time, and who knows what psychological damage was done- the fact remains, this. Is. Wrong.
And I know it isn’t the only time this has happened.
The whole idea for this episode came to me after seeking out a podcast hosts age. I stumbled upon a subreddit (?) where people were ripping this man to shreds because they didn’t like some of the info on his podcasts. Public info that he found, publicly, to include in his episode. But it didn’t stop there. People went on and on, giving their opinions on his intelligence, his voice, his ideas, anything they felt entitled to shit on.
And for what?
Who even asked?
These are real people. Celebrities, podcast hosts, YouTube personalities, they are all human beings. With feelings, with insecurities, with fears, with hope, with families, with friends, with love in their hearts, with an artistic vision they want to share with the world. Humans.
I’m not talking about fighting against systems of oppression, like governments, agencies that keep people down. We should be saying those things. IN A PROGRESSIVE WAY. But we’re not. We’re setting bonfires over a TikTok personality’s post. Reposting things we heard about someone without even looking into the accuracy of the statement. Fueling hate. Fueling misinformation.
And "cancel culture"- my eyes are rolling so hard my head hurts. Just because you don't like something A- does not mean it's true. B- does not remove the fact that others still like said person and know your rantings are full of shit. C- gives you some fake power boost that is all in your head. And you all cosign this nonsense. Why?
What does that do for you?
What does it do for our society?
All of this pucky keeps us stuck where we are. In a land of ignorance, oppression, and hatred.
Level up people. Stop fueling the fire that keeps us primitive beings. If you want to start a fire, start one that makes a difference in our world. Start one that shines the light on a crooked system. Start one that illuminates the need to help someone.
Let’s at least pretend mankind is better than what we've been.
